Crisis in Catalonia: my thoughts

Okay, let's address the elephant in the room: it's nearly two weeks since my previous post. The reason is that I recently went back to school. I've been unemployed for the last six months so I decided to do something to increase my chances of finding work. Also, while my plan was to talk about Trump, I recently read some news regarding Catalonia. To those who are not familiar with the situation, here's some background to the situation. Catalonia is, at least officially, an autonomous part of Spain, To be clear, Spain is divided into multiple autonomous regions with varying decrees of self determination. This is because the country is culturally very diverse. The idea behind the division of power is to keep the country in tact while still making sure that the rights of the different linguistic and cultural minorities are respected. You can probably already guess that not everybody is too happy with the current situation. As a result, many of the autonomous communities ...

About Trump...

So, here we are. After president Trumps recent decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel despite serious opposition from basically the whole world, including members of his own administration, I knew I had to write about this man. But when I started to plan the post itself, I soon realized how hard it would be. This is surprising considering all the stupid shit this man has done during his time in office and his campaign before that. You'd think it would be easy to just start writing about all the stuff he has done and said. The problem is, he has done and said so much stupid shit that I've lost count.  All his broken promises, his efforts to repeal Obamacare, the planned "tax cut" which only benefits the rich, all the blatant racism and sexism, the travel ban affecting countries that have never attacked the US, attacks towards the media and his critics, escalation of wars, all the stuff regarding Russia... There actually is too much to write about. I...

Finland's 100th independence day: my thoughts

Today 6th of December 2017 is Finland's 100th independence day. Independence day has always been very important day for Finns but this year is special. As a result, multiple famous landmarks across the world have been lit in white and blue, the colors of the Finnish flag in celebration of this occasion. The whole year of 2017 has been full of events celebrating 100 years of independence. While this year definitely is something worth celebrating, this celebration takes some very grotesque forms. My main grievance with the celebrations is the glorification of war. During world war two, Finland fought two wars against the Soviets and this fact is given way too much attention. Among the public the military is one of the most respected institutions which is one of the main reasons why conscription still enjoys as much support it does. Now, I've already made four posts about that topic, so you already know what I think about that. The military is essentially considered to be above ...

Finnish conscription pt.4: Reserve objectors and problems with the system

My plan was to stay away from Finnish conscription for a bit longer, but turns out a few topics I was planning to write about are a bit more complex than I thought. So, just to get something done, let's take a look at one more problem regarding the Finnish military, namely reserve objectors. I already briefly mentioned these people in a previous post on this topic, but let's go a bit deeper this time. Reserve objectors are people who after finishing their military service and becoming a part of the reserves, decide that they don't want to be in the reserves anymore. In order to leave the reserves, you have to complete a form of additional service, after which you are officially recognized as a conscientious objector and you're exempt from military service under all circumstances.Their motivations vary from person to person. Some develop anti-war views later in life, while some leave just because they got a call up to refreshment training at an inconvenient time and ca...

Finnish neo-Nazi group forced to disband: my thoughts

This will probably be a lot shorter than than my other post but I just feel I have to give my two cents on this. Yesterday, 30th of November, the Pirkanmaa District Court gave a decision that the neo-Nazi group Nordic Resistance Movement and all organizations related to them have to shut down their operations in Finland. This decision comes after major backlash against the group after one of it's members assaulted a counter protester last year. This is not the only time this group has resulted to violence, but it was the straw that broke the camels back. Still, I'm not sure if this was the right decision. Let's look at the groups history. Nordic Resistance Movement originally started as a collective of regional neo-Nazi groups operating in Nordic countries. In 2016, they announced that the regional groups have disbanded and instead they are now all operating under the banner of Nordic Resistance Movement. Now, I don't now about the situation in other countries that we...
