About Trump...

So, here we are. After president Trumps recent decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel despite serious opposition from basically the whole world, including members of his own administration, I knew I had to write about this man. But when I started to plan the post itself, I soon realized how hard it would be.

This is surprising considering all the stupid shit this man has done during his time in office and his campaign before that. You'd think it would be easy to just start writing about all the stuff he has done and said. The problem is, he has done and said so much stupid shit that I've lost count.  All his broken promises, his efforts to repeal Obamacare, the planned "tax cut" which only benefits the rich, all the blatant racism and sexism, the travel ban affecting countries that have never attacked the US, attacks towards the media and his critics, escalation of wars, all the stuff regarding Russia... There actually is too much to write about. I could spend the next four years just talking about Trump and nothing else, but that would defeat the purpose of this blog. My point with starting this blog was to raise awareness to issues I personally care about, with a special focus on my native Finland. Since the President of the United States is considered to be the most powerful person on the planet, I knew I had to write about him at some point. But what should I write about?

I mean, I could just make this into a massive "I told you so", but don't think that's a good idea. After all, I did follow the election, including from American sources, so I do understand why the result was what it was. You had to pick between two abysmal candidates. Hillary Clinton was the establishment candidate who had gone through serious scandals during her career and was the very embodiment of what's wrong with the American political system. Trump on the other hand was this bombastic outsider who promised to make everything better. Ultimately it was a protest vote. People were fed up with the political establishment and wanted to express their frustration, which really led to Trumps election. That's really what it was, a shock to the system.

That being said, we can't just let Trump of the hook. Even though his election was bit of a fluke thanks to the Electoral College and his idiotic statements, he is still the most powerful man on the planet. As funny as his statements may sound, they have consequences. That decision regarding Jerusalem creates massive obstacles for peace in the region as the city is not only a holy site to three major religions, but the eastern parts of the city also considered by the Palestinians to be their capital as well. Things like the tax cut and his efforts to repeal Obamacare would make life even more miserable for the poor. His attacks towards the media are essentially efforts silence his critics, which is a major threat to freedom of speech. Despite the inherent absurdity of this man is dangerous and has to be kept in check by the common people.

You might wonder why someone like me is concerned about Trump. After all, I'm a foreigner, he's not my leader, so why do I care so much about him?. The fact is, this man is threat to the entire world. Even though his policies may not directly affect me personally, he's forming a serious threat for the future and that's the problem I have with him. And I'm not just talking about the possibility of nuclear war with North Korea. His economic policies have been tried in the past and after a brief period of economic growth, they've led to a recession, which thanks to the role of the US as the only modern superpower, would affect the entire world. But ultimately, his most dangerous policy is his stance on climate change. Scientist have been warning about climate change for decades, but we're only now starting to realize the implications of it. I mean, it took until 2015 for countries to agree on the very minimum of actions to combat climate change as the Paris Climate Accord was drafted and it was only last year that it came in to force. Again, the agreement only covers the bare minimum of what we have to do in order to limit the effects of climate change. And then Donald Trump comes in the picture and decides to pull out of the agreement, because of Americas interests. At the same time, the decision forms a threat to the existence of our species. Thankfully the opposition towards this decision has been strong, as individual states and cities in the US have decided to follow the agreement and world leaders have decided to renew their commitment to the agreement.

I'll probably spent some time talking about Trump. The fact is that there is so much to write about this man that I can't fit it into one post. I don't know how long I will talk about him. Also, because of some changes in my life, I don't know when I'll be posting next time. But anyway, I'm already waiting for my head to explode from the sheer absurdity this man has done and probably will keep doing in the future.
