From the MEP's five supported both economic and human rights based sanctions.

According to Uutissuomalainen, ten from Finland's 14 MEP's support EU-level sanctions against China due to the late June enactment of a national security law in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

From the MEP's Ville Niinistö (Greens), Alviina Alametsä (Greens), Elsi Katainen (Center), Miapetra Kumpula-Natri (Social Democrats) and Silvia Modig (Left Alliance) support sanction based on both economical and human rights based sanctions.

Alametsä points out that the EU is currently negotiating with China about a massive investment deal.

"The deal should include legally binding clauses to protect sustainable development and especially human rights," Alametsä told Uutissuomalainen.

According to Alametsä, EU countries should also consider about taking China to the International Court of Justice due to it's unilateral enactment of a national security law in Hong Kong.

(Note: the European Parliament recently adopted a resolution calling for a lawsuit at the International Court of Justice.)

"Both the EU and it's individual member states should support the UK, if it for example wanted to take China to the International Court of Justice over violations of international law," says Heidi Hautala (Greens)

Eero Heinäluoma (Social Democrats) and Sirpa Pietikäinen (National Coalition) say that EU countries should decide togethet to not apply their extradition treaties with Hong Kong. They also say member states should temporarily facilitate easier access to visas for Hong Kong residents and to increase the number of scholarships given to students.

Meanwhile Laura Huhtasaari (Finns) and Petri Sarvamaa (National Coalition) support economic sanctions, including tariffs for Chinese products or banning the Chinese company Huawei from European 5g-networks. The UK made a decision to ban Huawei last week.
