America's gun problem

This is a sightly edited version of a post I made to a short lived blog I started back in 2015. It's one of two posts I made on the issue of gun violence and control in America. I decided to re-post both of them here, because of the fact that the situation in America on the issue of gun control is practically the same as it was back in 2015. I think, I've developed a lot as a writer since then, and I think you will notice it. That being said, feel free to enjoy the ramblings of a 18-year-old boy, who was going through some changes in his life and was desperate to went out his frustration. Link to the other post here

As we all know, the US has the highest gun ownership rates in the world. It also has the highest number of homicides and gun related crimes in the developed world. Actually, more Americans have died in gun related accidents and crimes than actual wars. This is not normal! No matter what you say makes this acceptable. This trend could be easily changed, but every time people try to do something about it, their attempts fall to the idiotic masses of gun nuts that are well organised and hold important positions in the government.

Since I'm talking about gun ownership in a negative fashion, I know that there is a guy named Josh living in the swamps of Louisiana shouting from the top of his lungs "They're taking my guns!"(read in a thick southern accent). Don't worry Josh, I don't want to take your guns away. And neither do the liberals trying to push gun control laws. All we want is to prevent future mass shootings by making sure that no mentally ustable person or somebody with a history of violence gets their hand on a firearm. I do understand, that we can't completely stop it, but unlike many conservatives tend to think, attemps on doing it actually work.

I live in a country with one of the highest gun ownership rates, but we also have one of the lowest gun crime rates in the world. This is because of our gun control laws. If you want to buy a gun in Finland, you need to be at least 18-years old and have a reason for having a gun (for instance hunting). You also have to go through a psychological test.

Of course, legislation like this would never go through in America. That's why nobody (except the most hardcore ones) actually want to have that. All they want are background checks to make sure, the person has no history of violence. Some people want to make diagnosis of mental illness more easily accessible to people with low income. The problem is the sheer stupidity of these gun nuts. They believe that more guns will eventually solve the problem. You already have the most guns in the world! It doesn't work that way! In other hand, making mental health services more accessible takes more money. This means more taxes. And apparently, Americans care more about money than their own safety.

For fucks sake! You people live in a country where mass shootings happen on a daily basis! How many people must die before you wake up and realize something is wrong?
